Whether you’ve taken a long break since your last academic endeavor, or enjoyed the seemingly short months of summer break, getting back into study mode can be tougher than it sounds. We’re all guilty of getting a little too comfortable lounging around by the pool. If finding the motivation to hit the books doesn’t come naturally for you, here are five tips to get you focused on the semester ahead.
Plan your routes from work to class. Make sure you give yourself time to find your classes and parking, especially on the first week of school. This will save you a lot of trouble, and if you do get lost, you’ll have time to spare! For more information on parking rates, maps and more, visit http://humber.ca/facilities/parking-transportation
Figure out a time management and organization system that works for you. Getting a planner can be a great start and can help you stay on top of your schedule. Try colour-coding your classes, work and other commitments to stay organized and help visualize your workload. Shop for school supplies on campus or online at the Humber Book Store: http://www.bkstr.com/humberitstore/home
Bring snacks, phone chargers and other daily necessities with you to class. If you’re going straight from your 9-5 to your evening class, you don’t want an empty stomach and a drained battery. Be prepared and you’ll save yourself the headache. Oh, and bring Tylenol too. Visit https://humber.ca/faculty-staff/humber-food-services for a list of food services and hours.
Get excited about starting a new class or learning a new skill! This may be easier said than done, but changing your mindset about school can really boost your success. Ask yourself what it is that you want out of this learning experience and have that be your end goal. Get involved with on campus activities by visiting taking a fitness class or visiting an on-campus event: http://humber.ca/student-life/
Be sure to put aside time to see friends and family. Going back and forth between work and school can be draining, and it’s important to recharge and spend time with your social circle to stay balanced. Besides, you can impress your friends and family with your new found skill! Humber also has great career options if you’re looking to get involved with working on campus. If you’re feeling overwhelmed about this upcoming school year, don’t worry. This is just the first step to achieving your goals!
