Most graduates are successful in their applications to many programs in Humber’s School of Media Studies & Information Technology: Film and Television Production, Broadcast Television/Videography, Broadcasting - Radio, Journalism, Media Communications, Multimedia Design and Development, Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing Communications, and others. Transfer credits may also available for some programs.

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Humber’s Media Foundation certificate program helps you develop a strong foundation in digital media, communications, writing, design and academic skills, preparing you for potential entry into more advanced media programs in Humber’s School of Media Studies & Information Technology. You’ll receive a thorough introduction to a wide variety of subjects with courses that include media communications, video and audio production, film studies, photography, web and digital design. You’ll also get a real sense of what it’s like to work in these different areas. Ultimately, our program will introduce you to a variety of roles in media so you can make an informed decision about how to pursue your career.
With small classes and expert instruction, the Media Foundation program is an excellent path to more specialized training.Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
Acquire the basic skills needed to be accepted into other programs within the School of Media Studies and Information Technology.
Determine and develop personal strengths and talents in a chosen field.
Describe the evolution of cinema as a modern art and recognize and discuss various genres of film and the works of directors.
Take photographs using digital cameras and process them electronically.
Evaluate effective websites and use programs to create websites.
Understand and discuss the purposes of the media in a democratic society and recognize the strengths and limitations of the various media including the Internet.
Apply the basics of good design and recognize the role of typography in graphic design.
Explore the role of public relations and write basic news releases.
Engage in the personal selling process and recognize the effectiveness of different media to sell products or services.
Use industry standard software for manipulating images.
Use industry standard software as a design tool.
Layout pages and import visuals using industry standard software.
Videotape live action using video cameras.
Use audio production techniques.
A career in media can take you in many directions: video production, journalism, public relations, interactive media, advertising, and digital design and imaging. Our program allows you to experience all these possibilities and will help you decide where you want to go next. In the process, you will develop skills in writing, digital editing, photography and web design – skills that are critical in our digital-media age.
You will be guided, coached and supported by instructors with extensive industry experience. In your second semester, you will choose electives that will provide you with more advanced training and help you prepare for your next step – then we’ll help you apply to other programs that will lead you to your media career of choice. Our goal is to set you up for success.
