  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
    • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

Mature Applicants

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older (21 or older for degree programs) as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U level or equivalent.

College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber will use your college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

University Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber will use your university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

Selection:

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.

Additional Costs

Art supplies (list available upon acceptance) for textbooks, subscriptions and printing costs (up to $500 per year); a home computer is encouraged - instructors can advise on technical needs and sources for affordable Macintosh computers and software.

Humber Degree Pathways

Complete your degree with us. Humber's degrees are designed with our diploma graduates in mind. We'll give you credit for what you’ve already learned and help you take the next step in less time.

Graduates may be considered for admission to:

Creative Advertising, Bachelor of 

Graduates with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent or more may be considered for admission. Graduates may then complete the degree with the equivalent of six semesters of full-time study plus a work term.  Successful applicants must also possess:

  • ENG4U or Humber’s WRIT 100 or 200 level course, or equivalent, with a minimum grade of 70 per cent.

Admission will be based on availability in the program.

*The advanced standing outlined is a general guideline. Diploma graduates may be required to take courses in lower semesters in order to meet the overall degree learning outcomes.

Common Platform

The first semester of study for the 2-year Advertising & Graphic Design program is shared with the: 2-year Advertising and Marketing Communication diploma, 2-year Media Communication diploma , 3-year Journalism advanced diploma and 3-year Public Relations advanced diploma program allowing students some flexibility when moving into their second semester of study.

Future Study Options

Graduates of any two-year diploma program at Humber who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 70% or greater will be eligible to enter year three of the 4-yr Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) at the University of New Brunswick.  Depending on the diploma program, students may be exempted from study in certain courses and therefore, requested to take alternate courses offered by the Faculty of Business.

Our Program

Humber’s intensive Advertising and Graphic Design diploma program was developed to meet industry demand for advertising art directors and graphic designers with solid strategic, visual, conceptual, typographic and technical skills. Classes focus on these areas of study and emphasize important life skills such as creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork and presentation skills.

You will explore the many facets of visual communication including colour theory, conceptual process, typography, design, marketing strategies, interactive media and digital design through the use of current tools that meet industry standards. You will also have the unique opportunity to apply these skills in Humber’s real-world ad agency/design studio and experience linkage opportunities with both the Advertising Copywriting, and Advertising – Account Management programs. The first year of this program is shared with the three-year Graphic Design advanced diploma program which will offer you exposure to different areas of communication design before confirming a focus in your second year of study.

Our advisory committee, a group of experienced art directors and designers, provides regular review and input into our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments. Many of our faculty are part-time instructors who spend their non-teaching time working in current day industry settings, allowing them to share their experiences and connections with you in the classroom every week.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Develop and implement solutions to problems encountered in the production phase of the graphic design process.
  • Produce effective visual communications through the application of design theories and principles according to specifications.
  • Use a variety of technologies to capture and manipulate design elements in producing a final product.
  • Apply typographic skills and knowledge to produce effective visual communications.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, clients, and others; work in a professional manner; and maintain professional relationships.

Work Placement

The unpaid 120-hour work placement normally takes place during the month following the last semester of study (May). You will research your field to take advantage of opportunities to market yourself to prospective employers to find your own work placement locally or abroad. You will be supported through this process by faculty advisors.

Humber AdCentre

The Humber AdCentre was launched as a live lab to provide students with real work opportunities before entering the industry.

Instead of just being given just a grade for assignments, students are provided with a chance to work with real clients, on actual accounts, receiving first-hand experience in the field.

Working with established businesses will not only prepare students for the fast-paced excitement of the industry, but will also help develop portfolio work and reference points for interviews.

Corporate identities thrive on marketing their brand, image, and message through every available medium. Whether it is advertising through social media, books, magazines, posters, billboards, etc., most use creative advertising and graphic design to promote awareness and interest in their company and products.

Our graduates have the knowledge to create and successfully implement professional design and advertising campaigns for advertising agencies, design studios, in-house design and marketing departments, interactive studios, sales promotion companies, or magazine editorial designers. Freelance opportunities in art direction and design are expanding and can be very lucrative.
