Interactive media is an ever-expanding, multidisciplinary industry that combines the creative and the technical skills to build the tools that we have come to depend on every day. Whether it is the design of a website for the next great product or service, the development of a mobile app that helps people connect on the go, or the exploration of the ever increasing connection of physical objects to the digital world known as the Internet of Things, the creation of interactive media takes a diverse skill set. This skill set includes visual design, coding, the ability to imagine what has not yet been built and the production skills to build it – all within a dynamic, growing industry that is constantly reinvented by new technologies.
Humber’s Web Design and Interactive Media advanced diploma program helps you build the fundamental design and development skills of the industry and gives you room to self-specialize in the field. The program guides you through the creation of a portfolio of work including a cumulative learning capstone project in the third year that demonstrates the full breath of learning. The program also strives to create a culture that is passionate about the medium, fearless about new technology, familiar with entrepreneurial options in this field and eager to engage in the interactive media community. Students in this program will also learn real-world user experience skills through the use of our unique, state-of-the-art mobile usability lab where user experience comes to life.Courses Program Standards
This program does not have a work placement component, however, within the final year, you are connected with an industry partner for an industry project. These are generally done at the studio of the industry partner, allowing you to get a feel for the studio environment and build relationships that can lead to employment. Additionally, the program stresses engagement with industry through guest speakers, studio tours, facilitating freelance work and conference participation.
The Usability Lab is a new facility for students in the School of Media Studies & Information Technology at Humber College. This “Live Lab” is a full-fledged usability lab where content creators can capture & assess the interaction between user and design.
This Usability Lab is specialized, in that it was purposefully built for usability studies to ensure that the environment does not interfere with the testing. Designed with flexibility at its core, it has been equipped with a broad variety of technology, supporting usability testing at many different levels of sophistication.
What makes this lab unique is the fact that it is mobile. This one-of-a-kind usability lab can be delivered to those who wish to use and evaluate our designs, as well as their own. For our students, they can participate in, and lead experiments that will truly test the designs they have developed, to make sure they work in the manner they have been designed to work.
The interactive media field, also referred to as digital media, has been growing consistently at twice the national average for the last ten years. As digital technology becomes more central to our lives, there is an increased demand for those who can imagine, design and develop these experiences. These digital creatives are employed as interactive designers and developers in a variety of companies including interactive studios, advertising agencies and as freelance designers. Increasingly, they are also becoming involved with start-ups to create the next great products/apps.
