Our Program

Humber’s Public Relations (PR) advanced diploma program graduates are highly sought after by agencies, business, government and nonprofit organizations. Employers recognize value in the Humber PR brand and this makes our successful graduates more marketable.

Increased use of social media is expected to increase the employment growth for PR specialists. Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.

This program is focused on professional writing skills and content development. With your public relations training, it’s not just what you learn that makes the difference, but who’s teaching you. Your professors have significant industry experience and share their expertise in the classroom to prepare you for the real-world. Our intensive, hands-on approach is why many students have won awards for their achievements from the International Association of Business Communicators, Canadian Public Relations Society and PR agencies. As a graduate, you will be armed with an impressive portfolio..

Our advisory committee of external industry experts conducts regular reviews of our curriculum, ensuring our program is relevant and leading-edge.

The first semester of this program is shared with the two-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma, the three-year Journalism advanced diploma, the two-year Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma, and the two-year Media Communications diploma programs, allowing the flexibility to continue in any of these five programs in second semester.

Courses Program Standards

Work Placement

Our students hit the ground running when they undertake a 12-week work placement (approximately 35 hours per week) to gain valuable work experience in their final semester of study. Many leading companies turn to Humber first when seeking students. The school works with students to arrange work placements which may be paid or unpaid.

The Humber Experience

Communication Platform

This program has a common platform with 1 common semester, giving you 5 choices.

Humber AdCentre

The Humber AdCentre was launched as a live lab to provide students with real work opportunities before entering the industry.

Instead of just being given just a grade for assignments, students are provided with a chance to work with real clients, on actual accounts, receiving first-hand experience in the field.

Working with established businesses will not only prepare students for the fast-paced excitement of the industry, but will also help develop portfolio work and reference points for interviews.

Your Career

Upon graduation, you will have the knowledge to plan, develop and execute effective public relations plans using social and traditional media. Opportunities include employment in corporations, charities, government, PR firms and many others.

Humber Students Talk their Way to a Trophy

Two SMSIT students competed on March 8th in Voices 2017, an annual speech competition run by PR students for PR students in the GTA. Justin Hartman, a first year Public Relations Advanced Diploma student placed third winning a $200 Apple gift certificate.
