Cobi Ladner

Cobi Ladner had her eye on a career in television after graduating from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Radio & Television Arts program; however, the writing was on the wall for her to work in print. She landed her first job at Chatelaine magazine, then moved on to Canadian Living and eventually House & Home magazine where she enjoyed a special connection with Canadian homeowners through her role as editor-in-chief for 15 years. Cobi was a key contributor to building the H&H brand in all areas from product with The Bay, to television with HGTV and daily morning shows, to an online presence, books, and special interest publications.

In 2008, Cobi struck out on her own to create a home decor and media brand embodying her personal style and spirit. In five short years, cobistyle grew to be a nationally recognized brand with products available in over 1,000 stores across Canada. She authored a best-selling children’s book called Why is an Orange called an Orange? A firm believer in lifelong learning, Cobi completed her master of ducation in 2020 with a focus on adult education.

Her work as an arts reporter has helped showcase young creatives of colour in popular teen magazines such as TeenVogue, Bustle and Hello Giggles. Her stories on lesser known Black historical communities for TVO and Narratively.com have garnered over 100,000 views. Currently she is a contributor for CBC, TVO, TeenVogue and Macleans. Kelly Roche

Kelly Roche is a multimedia storyteller who specializes in digital journalism and social media.

She's the first Humber College instructor to use Instagram in the classroom and empowers students by teaching the latest technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

Her broadcasting career began with (hoop) dreams of covering the NBA as a sideline reporter, soon realizing she prefers crime scene tape to rebounds. Kelly became a daily news reporter and videographer at CTV Windsor and the Ottawa Sun.

The $100 Startup inspired Kelly to channel her newsroom hustle into an entrepreneurial venture. She created QEW South Post, an innovative hyperlocal news site, less than 24 hours after reading the book. Kelly worked seven days a week as a reporter/editor/publisher covering two city wards in Mississauga, Ont., while building a brand and strategic relationships.

Kelly's disruption was embraced by the community. She was recruited by Quickbite News as a senior editor for another startup, successfully launching InHalton.com, a content marketing blog covering the suburbs further west of Toronto. The site blends traditional news and lifestyle with viral content; she played a huge role in effectively packaging items for social, mobile and video. By creating strategic partnerships and leveraging data, Kelly was instrumental in garnering nearly 14,000 organic Facebook likes in its first 365 days.

Her freelance work currently focuses on business, sustainability, and news in the Greater Toronto Area.

Kelly is best described by a former newspaper editor as ""fearless.""

Your Career

Everywhere you look, people are tweeting, posting, sharing, writing, shooting video, creating audio projects and more. But how can you tell what’s accurate, what has merit and what is important? The need for news and expertise – the hallmark of journalism at Humber – has never been greater.

While, historically, many graduates have found work as a reporter for a newspaper, a radio or TV station or as a magazine feature writer, today you may be just as likely to see your career develop in digital communications, either working for an enterprise or developing your own independent entrepreneurial brand.

As media organizations change to meet the needs of the public, there are more opportunities for people with modern communication skillsets to begin their careers. These skills are transferable to all industries and sectors – wherever there are organizations looking to communicate their message, build their brand and tell their stories.
