Our Program

Design is all around us, in the built environment we navigate, the financial and social services we access, the products we consume, the processes we use to do our jobs. Design is also driving innovative solutions to the planet’s most pressing and urgent problems. There has never been a more exciting or relevant time to be a designer.

Humber’s Bachelor of Design program responds to the increasing demand for designers who are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century by keeping the concept of human-centeredness as the grounding and unifying principle upon which the program is built, with a focus on how design thinking can be harnessed for social change, to improve daily experiences, and to make processes and interfaces (human and digital) more user-focused.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Integrate myriad contextual and theoretical considerations that influence design decisions in order to articulate a practical design philosophy.
  • Select and use appropriate design principles, tools and methods to discover and address worthy design problems and insights regarding human experiences.
  • Create contemporary experience design solutions in response to well-researched human problems using both time-honoured and emerging design technologies and methods.
  • Communicate questions, stories, and design solutions regarding user experience by effective means including verbal, non-verbal, visual, written, and interactive forms suitable to the specific purpose and audience.
  • Assess the reasonable limits to design knowledge and practice which explicitly or implicitly constrain proposed solutions to user experience challenges.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor through words and actions exemplifying respect, integrity, accountability, interdependence, and relentless curiosity.

Work Placement

You will participate in 420 hours of supervised work placement, spread over four semesters. Students will be able to select from a wide variety of opportunities in a range of organizations such as design agencies, financial services, health-care settings or service environments. They acquire hands-on experience in defining and implementing design projects and developing client relationships.
