Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses: 
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent) 
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

Additional Costs

$1,000 – textbooks; Globe & Mail subscriptions; portfolio case; student memberships in both professional associations: Canadian Public Relations Society and International Association of Business Communicators.

Pathways are academic routes that students can take to move from one credential to another.

PATHWAYS WITHIN HUMBER AFTER THIS PROGRAM

View Degree 

Graduates with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent or more may be considered for admission. Graduates may then complete the degree with the equivalent of four semesters of full-time study plus a work term. Successful applicants must also possess:

  • ENG4U or Humber’s WRIT 100 or 200 level course, or equivalent, with a minimum grade of 65 per cent.

Admission will be based on availability in the program.

*The advanced standing outlined is a general guideline. Diploma graduates may be required to take courses in lower semesters in order to meet the overall degree learning outcomes.

$2500.00 Diploma to Degree Transfer Student Scholarship

All students who have achieved a cumulative program grade point average (GPA) of 80% or better upon graduation of their Ontario college diploma will be automatically awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500 in recognition of their academic achievement at the diploma level.

PATHWAYS OUT TO A PARTNER INSTITUTION

Programs:

  • Bachelor of Media - Public Relations and Social Media

Humber students who have successfully completed the Advertising and Marketing Communications Diploma or the Public Relations Advanced Diploma with a GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 (62.5%) or 4.5 out of 7.0 and who meet all other admission requirements may apply for the Bachelor of Media - Public Relations and Social Media at Macquarie University.

Programs:

  • BBA Marketing

For those students who complete a 3 year diploma at Humber, Davenport University will grant the student 90 credit hours toward the completion of a bachelor degree program. You will need to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours (approximately one year of full-time attendance) to meet residency and program requirements and to complete your bachelor degree program. Students must complete a minimum total of 120 semester credit hours to earn a bachelor degree. The total credit hours will include the completed 3 year diploma classes plus any courses completed through Davenport University.

  • Law LLB

Humber students who have successfully completed a Diploma in any field at Humber College and meet the requirements, will be considered for admission into the University of Gloucestershire's Law LLB (Hons) (2-year fast track). International students should demonstrate and must provide evidence that they have attained a level of English Equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall. Applicants from Humber College who meet the requirements will be eligible for admission to Griffith University (Nathan and Gold Coast) with full block transfer credit, provided all other entrance criteria are met and space remains available in the related program of study.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Our program provides hands-on training and develops skills in professional media writing, strategic communication planning, presentation, social and digital media content development, social media analytics, media relations, and marketing communications to name a few. Over the course of your studies, you will compile an impressive portfolio of work.

Learn from the pros. Humber’s PR faculty has significant work experience and subject matter expertise. At Humber, you are more than a number. Your instructors get to know you by name and offer personalized instruction. To keep the program content current, relevant and leading edge, external industry experts regularly review the curriculum.  

The first semester of the program could be described as a sampler program. You will get a taste of other media disciplines such as advertising and graphic design, journalism, media communications, advertising, and marketing communications. This allows you to keep your options open should you wish to head in a different direction in your second semester.

Courses Program Standards Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Coordinate and contribute to the planning of public relations activities, including the development of clear, measurable communication objectives and project or tactical budgets and selection of strategies, tactics, tools and resources, to manage a range of stakeholder* relationships and support organizational objectives.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the implementation of strategies and tactics and the management of budgets and resources for a range of public relations activities to achieve communication objectives and meet activity guidelines and requirements.
  • Write and edit clear, accurate, targeted copy aligned to organizational objectives, appropriate for the chosen channel(s)* and to a specified deadline.
  • Apply visual, audio, multimedia and interactive elements, fundamental design principles and accessibility standards, independently and collaboratively, to enhance the production of effective, timely communications appropriate for diverse channels* and audiences.
  • Select information sources, research tools and results, and apply analytical skills to guide the development of communication objectives, selection of strategies and tactics and evaluation of the impact of public relations activities.
  • Engage stakeholders* by adapting language, tone and presentation style to the public relations purpose, situation, audience and channel(s)*.
  • Comply with and support others to work in accordance with relevant professional association and industry codes of ethics, public relations professional standards and practices, and legal obligations, protocols and policies.
  • Keep current with emerging social and economic trends, and local, national and global issues to enhance public relations plans and activities, support organizational effectiveness and stakeholder* relationships, and guide ongoing personal professional development.
  • Select and use current and emerging technologies to enhance the quality and delivery of public relations activities and support organizational effectiveness.
  • Select strategies and tools to build and maintain professional relationships to support public relations activities, organizational objectives and career development.

BuildingF (formerly the AdCentre) brings marketers and agencies together with advanced students from virtually any Humber program to produce strategic creative content and technology solutions.

Instead of just being given a grade for assignments, students are provided with a chance to work with real clients, on actual accounts, receiving first-hand experience in the field.

The disciplines that can be accessed through BuildingF include anything found in a modern advertising, design or PR agency, including brand experience design, communications marketing, advertising design, writing, production, and much more.

Your Career

Humber Students Talk their Way to a Trophy

Two SMSIT students competed on March 8th in Voices 2017, an annual speech competition run by PR students for PR students in the GTA. Justin Hartman, a first year Public Relations Advanced Diploma student placed third winning a $200 Apple gift certificate.
